It must be easier for local communities to make their own contingency plans

A new guide from the Danish Civil Protection Agency is a practical and simple tool that can help local communities prepare for crises.

Several local communities have already taken matters into their own hands and established a local emergency response in case of crises. Now, a new guideline from the Danish Civil Protection Agency will make it easier for other local communities to follow suit. The guide guides local communities step by step to organise a contingency plan so that citizens can be better equipped to deal with emergencies and unforeseen events such as fire, flooding and power outages.

Minister for Civil Protection and Emergency Preparedness Torsten Schack Pedersen says: "Denmark is facing the most serious threat and risk picture since World War II. And there is a need for strengthened civil preparedness. Initiatives, such as a local emergency plan in Køge North, are a good example of how we increase the resilience of society. I therefore hope that the guidance will inspire more local communities to create a local emergency preparedness. The advice in the guide is aimed at all types of housing associations, landowners' associations and other local communities that want to strengthen their local preparedness. Director of the Danish Agency for Civil Protection

Laila Reenberg says: "If we have a little extra water, food, heat and other necessities at home, then a potential crisis is not such a big challenge because we have a plan to get through it. When several people join forces on a plan in the local community, you also share what may seem difficult to manage. You share the responsibility, but you reap the full benefits. That is why local emergency services are such an obvious good idea.
